Wellness Exams Q & A

What is a wellness exam?

A wellness exam is a preventive health measure that your primary care physician performs to determine your overall physical health. In addition to providing you insights about issues such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes, a wellness exam presents an opportunity to build a relationship with Dr. Dudley.

During your wellness exam, you can ask questions about your health or discuss any changes or unusual symptoms you’ve noticed. Depending on your health history and age, Dr. Dudley might also recommend a series of screening procedures.

How often should I participate in a wellness exam?

Dr. Dudley recommends you participate in a wellness exam at least once a year, even if you feel relatively healthy. Many serious health problems such as hypertension don’t present symptoms in their early stages. As a result, you could be living with a life-threatening condition and not even realize it.

What happens during a wellness exam?

During a wellness exam, Dr. Dudley does a physical exam, reviews your medical history, and asks questions about your health and lifestyle habits. A wellness exam also presents the opportunity to:

  • Update your immunizations
  • Identify potential medical problems
  • Monitor your health goals over time

Dr. Dudley might also recommend a wellness exam prior to a surgical operation or before she starts treatment for a specific medical condition such as diabetes.

How do I prepare for a wellness exam?

Preparing for a wellness exam is easy and hassle-free. On the day of your appointment, arrive at SpringRidge Medical Clinic at least 10 minutes early to fill out the necessary paperwork. You should also bring a list of any prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements you’re currently taking. If you’ve met with any specialists or undergone any specific testing recently, make sure to share this information with Dr. Dudley as well.

Are wellness exams different for men and women?

All wellness exams follow a straightforward protocol. Dr. Dudley monitors your vital signs, including your heartbeat, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. She also gently presses on your internal organs, inspects your throat, nose, and ears, and tests your reflexes.

Because men and women have different reproductive organs, they also require different preventive tests. Dr. Dudley performs screening measures unique to your individual needs. For example, if you’re a woman,  Dr. Dudley might recommend a Pap test or breast exam. If you’re a man, she might recommend a prostate exam.

If it’s been more than a year since your last wellness exam, make an appointment at SpringRidge Medical Clinic today by calling the office or clicking the online booking tool. Better health starts here.
